"Statue
Unveiling "
|
President
Rutherford B. Hayes, General Ralph P. Buckland, and John
Lemmon worked diligently with Andrew Hickenlooper and the
Society of the Army of the Tennessee to raise funds for
the monument at McPherson's gravesite. The pedestrian statue,
a bronze likeness of McPherson, fulfilled the original promise
to place a memorial over his gravesite. Using their influence,
the men raised funds for a second sculpture by Louis Rebisso
of Cincinnati, Ohio.
